Hi,

so my 2015 13.3” Pro battery died, plugged in to charge, turned it on, and wouldn’t boot. Did some digging online, came up with some possible fixes like “fsck” commands, etc.

Long story short, I’m getting permission denied and exit code 66, and one of the other verify/repair failure codes is (-69716).

On disk utility, when running first aid on the primary drive, not the APFS partitions, it says there is a problem with partition maps that may prevent from booting.

Any suggestions? My luck, I haven’t gotten a backup recently, and really don’t want to lose my files. I guess I can try carbon copy cloner or some other service to capture files, but so far I’m unable to get a disk image off disk utility.

any advice is appreciated.

This sounds like an "erase and start over" scenario to me.

As for backups... you have what you have.
A lesson from which to learn.

I wild idea: what about Target disk mode? Have you got another macbook?
If yes, you can try connecting the two via Thunderbolt or Firewire cables and boot in Target disk mode. This way the MB in question will act as an external drive, so there's a chance of saving the files.

Do you have a brick-n-mortar Apple Store nearby?
Is it open?
If so, make an appt and take it to the genius bar -- let them have a look at it.
