I have a Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2010) with an updated video card (AMD HD7950) and a Samsung EVO 860 SSD. Ever since I added the EVO SSD the system will not restart (goes to the grey prohibit screen), but if I power the system off and then back on it starts fine. I have verified the Boot ROM as 144.0.0.0.0 and was running High Sierra, and have since update to Mojave. I have tried OS reinstall, and have run the firmware update on the EVO drive and verified it has the latest firmware. One odd thing (maybe because I had never looked before). The EVO drive is selected for startup under preferences, however when I run disk utility and look at the information for it, the EVO reports Bootable as No. I have tried disk first aid several times, no errors. Any ideas?

For more info, have you run disk utility from the Recovery Partition?

Also, how far have you gone with reinstalling macOS…that is, did you reformat the Samsung SSD completely before the reinstallation?

Yes, did a complete reformat (verified APFS) and reinstall. I ran disk utility on the recovery partition also. Wondering if it might be a bad CMOS battery....

Random thoughts...

Does Samsung have any firmware updates for the SSD?

If you were to take the SSD OUT OF the MPro, and put it into an external enclosure or a USB3/SATA docking station, would it boot that way?

I ran the rather pain in the behind firmware update for the EVO drive and it reported the drive had the latest firmware. I have tried the SSD in all four base of my MacPro with the same result, it will only boot after a full power down. I installed Sierra one of my old 1TB mechanical drives and it worked fine, and my other SSD with a Windows 8 install also works fine. There is a pretty good amount of posts about erratic EVO SSD performance on older Macs, so I think Im going to chalk this up to that as I really have run out of ideas. Going to replace it with a SanDisk 2TB tomorrow, and relegate the EVO as a data disk.

After you try this, could you put a follow-up post to let us know if the Sandisk boots (whereas the Samsung would not) ??

Installed the new SanDisk drive (2TB 3D), worked fine. Must be something about Samsung disks and older Macs.

There is definitely something about specific Macs and/or specific macOS versions and SSD compatibility. I'm surprised to see it happen with a Samsung SSD as they are often the solution to the problem.

And the last entry on this saga, I installed the Samsung EVO into my Alienware gaming rig and it worked fine.....so just a thing with the drive and my mac
