help with second monitor

i usually run a setup where my powerbook is open and used and plugged into a secondary monitor for more canvas space. i stopped using the second monitor for a few months and now long to return to that sort of configuration. when i plug the monitor in, tho, the light just blinks on it and there is no picture. i really dont know what to do with this, i tried to detect displays but am not aware of any other action i can take. can anyone please help me troubleshoot this
