Help with Shortcuts

I'm new to mac's and am having trouble with a shortcut. The shortcut has an arrow pointing up, command, and a letter. I'm hitting the up arrow and the other appropriate keys at the same time, alternating times, etc. and nothing is working. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong.
