Help with Spaces

At least I think I need help with Spaces....

Somehow, everything on my desktop disappears every so often. I found I can right click on the Finder icon and select show all windows to bring it back.

1. Why/how did everything disappear in the first place?
2. Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring it all back?
