help with stuck application

I have been using xACT to decompress files successfully for a few weeks and a week or so ago, as I was doing a checksum the application wouldn't quit running and I have not been able to turn it off - I can hide it and move on with other applications but i cannot figure out how to stop it, disable it etc and finally turn it off - the computer will not D/L any updates b/c of this - any thoughts on how to remedy this or where to look to get help for this issue?
