Help with tethering

I have a 15" MacBook Pro and an iPhone 5. I'm attempting to use the iPhone 5 to tether as a wifi hotspot, however, it says it has an assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet and I'm stuck. It works on my friend's MacBook Pro perfectly fine without doing anything to troubleshoot but do any of you know what this might be from and how I can fix it? Thanks
