Help with the DATE in a cell in NUMBERS

I'm new to using NUMBERS(I use excel) it seems pretty cut and dry to pick a way you want the date to be formatted in a cell, but unfortunately it hasn't been that easy. I have picked a cell and went to the inspector and picked the way I wanted the date to be formatted which is 1/12/14, I do not want to have to put in the slashes just want to type the numbers and have it automatically format this way, it puts in random numbers and doesn't do anything the way I chose, I actually have to manually put in the numbers and slashes. Please Help!
