Help with updating a friend's iPhone OS with my iTunes account

A friend uses an iPhone without iTunes and therefore has not updated the OS since purchasing it. Is there some way I can use iTunes on my MacBook to update his phone without syncing (i.e., all that would be done is updating the OS)? Would the same work for an iPad?
