help with upgrading

hello everyone..
I have a 24" Imac with the Intel core 2 duo processor. My machine is currently running Leopard. I would like to upgrade to Snow Leopard now in anticipation of Lion to soon follow. My question is, can I borrow the mac os/applications install discs that came with my brothers Imac (it has Snow Leopard) to upgrade mine or do I need to buy the Snow Leopard disc from Best Buy or Apple for $30?
