Help with usb devices

Hey there,

I'm just trying to make it so that when a I hook up my usb storage key it shows up on the desktop, does anyone know how to make this happen. I was told it was suppose to do it on its own but it's not happening so if anyone knows how to fix this it would be very much appreciated if you could tell me how.

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the Desktop
