Help with... wanting to create my own .ipsw

I've read and seen YouTube videos of peeps editing their .ipsw I'm wondering how this is done successfully on a mac?

I have downloaded a custom ipsw renamed it to zip extracted the files within the zip then just for kicks without even editing it tried to compress it back to a zip then rename back to ipsw.
Doing the custom restore option+click it fails...

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong I haven't even got so far as creating my own ipsw file (editing it) and it already fails.

if you try to extract them, you will fail md5. you have to edit the file you're workin on without extracting it. try StuffIt.
