So, I've got a widescreen video (DVD, ripped to hard drive) hardcoded to 4:3 dimensions, so when I watch on my widescreen TV it gets scaled, leaving black bars all the way around the video image.

What software could be used either to crop the video file, or just to display the video correctly on my TV? I was hoping VLC might work here, but I couldn't find any settings that did what I wanted. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I had missed this because (foolishly) I hadn't tried the crop options when fullscreen on the TV. When cropping on my computer monitor VLC doesn't scale the cropped video to the window dimensions, but it does scale the video when fullscreen on the TV.
