i need help recovering some important files that accidently got trashed last week. any advice?

Stop using your computer immediately.

Buy a piece of software like http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/datarescueii.html

Load it on another machine and try to recover the data. The more you use your computer, the more likely the trashed data will be overwritten and unrecoverable.
