I've installed HenWen for intrusion prevention/detection. I want the Snort NIDS to automatically start each time I use my computer, so in HenWen I select the menu item Special > "Start NIDS at this Mac's Startup". I then get the following message:
This will create a folder in your /Library/StartupItems folder. If you do not have write access to this folder, then this option will always give you an error. If you do not have a /Library/StartupItems folder, then this option will make one for you and set its permissions so that the folder can't be written to by anyone other than you and your group.
To this I reply by clicking the "YES - Go for it!" button. HenWen then says "Operation Successful!".
However, when I restart my computer and open HenWen, it says "NIDS is not running". :( There is also no StartupItems folder in my /Library folder. The console tells me the following:
mkdir: /Library/StartupItems: No such file or directory
Sep 10 13:40:57 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /bin/mkdir
mv: rename /var/tmp/tmp.0.1Ay5Jz to /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/HenWen: No such file or directory
Sep 10 13:40:57 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /Applications/HenWen.app/Contents/MacOS/gluprunner
Sep 10 13:40:57 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /usr/sbin/chown
chown: /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/HenWen: No such file or directory
chmod: /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/HenWen: No such file or directory
Sep 10 13:40:58 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /bin/chmod
mv: rename /var/tmp/tmp.1.v7wgbZ to /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/StartupParameters.plist: No such file or directory
Sep 10 13:40:58 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /Applications/HenWen.app/Contents/MacOS/gluprunner
Sep 10 13:40:58 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /usr/sbin/chown
chown: /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/StartupParameters.plist: No such file or directory
Sep 10 13:40:58 <my iBook's name> authexec: executing /bin/chmod
chmod: /Library/StartupItems/HenWen/StartupParameters.plist: No such file or directory
I run Mac OS X Tiger. How do I fix this? I tried first adding my own StartupItems/HenWen folder to /Library, then giving it the same permission as /Library, and then doing the above procedure again, but that doesn't work either. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
