Hi all,

First post and it's going to be a long one (you are warned :)).

First some information about my setup:

Macbook 5,1 (4GB retail ram upgrade, WD5000BEVT 500GB HDD upgraded myself)
with on the USB bus a Hercules Muse LT pocket:
USB Audio:

Product ID: 0xc000
Vendor ID: 0x06f8
Version: 1.00
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Location ID: 0x04100000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500

I am still running OSX 10.6.3, no time yet to upgrade and afraid of the impact on steam games :)

Now the background story, i bought a Z5500 system a couple weeks ago (yeah, not all too decent DAC and fake watts and whatnot, but coming from a X530 ...) and immediately purchased an optical cable an 3.5mm/TOSLINK plug. No problems at all when playing dvd/HD media with a Dolby/dts passthrough. Off course any other signals can't be encoded to dolby/dts (shame :)) so no surround in games, ...

So i saw this sound card lying in a bargain bin at the measly price of €5 so i went ahead and bought it. Surround in windows works perfectly, plug and play (tested wit halflife 2). Next i booted in OSX half expecting to be up and running even faster then on Windows.

Boy was i wrong ... After messing around a lil bit i found the audio/midi configuration utility and correctly configured the speakers (screens follow). Problem is that neither plex nor VLC play anything that even remotely sounds like surround. Plex plays stereo (fronts and a little subwoofer) and VLC simply hangs and crashes.
I used a .mkv file (H.264) with DTS track, a .vob file with dolby digital 5.1, a dvd with both of these, and another mkv with 5.1 AC3.

Anyone see whats going wrong ? I dont really mind because OSX games (steam) might not even support it to begin with and movies usually come with a DTS/DD track but i would love to know what's wrong.

PS: the channel tests in the midi configuration work flawlessly, which makes me believe that it's an application / OSX sound 'system' issue (openAL or something ?)
PPS: And yes i searched the forums but i haven't really found an answer to my question.
PPPS: Ekskuse me for any misstakes, my english isn't as good as i'd like it to be
