Thanks for that, any idea of how loud it is compared to surrounding areas? I would assume that you aren't going to hear much with all that much background noise, but who knows?

It is a lower end speaker or sound quality, but I wouldn't ever have expected it to be the primary way to listen to music. It's more for quick sound without the cumbersome headphones.

The iPod touch speakers suck, I used them, when you turn them right up playing a good quality track it sounds worse then my old phone (pictured below) :D

probably speaker is not very good because it doesn't even have holes for it...i would think that a speaker would need some holes to provide less acoustic resistance for better sound perception.

Sounds like it's about the same volume as the first generation iPhone but with considerably worse sound quality.

That sucks, because I can tell you from personal experience that the first iPhone was pretty quiet.

The 3G on the other hand has a pretty good speaker.

Yeah, but with no holes its thinner! Isent that more important than it working properly? :p

Thinner than what? I promise you it's not thinner than the 1st gen touch.

It is, I have used the new one and own the old one.

However, I was just making fun of it!

I think we would all like better speakers then a bit more thinness, but SJ obviously dont agree! :p

It's not a low end, cheap speaker. Have you seen how tiny it is? It can't be easy to engineer a speaker into that tiny device. But to be honest, I think it's too thin. The 1G was too thin for me as well. I think the 3G is the right thickness. Also, I have the 2G IPT and recently sold my EDGE iPhone and the iPhone's speaker was more crap. It was way too bass heavy so if you play a hip hop song or something, the bass sounds extremely garbled. The iPod doesn't have that. It's not a great speaker, but for what it is, it's good enough for most people.

Old one was thinner. Current one has maximum thickness of 8,5mm, old one was 8mm. Sure the edges are tapered, but you need a wider space for it.

I agree. When placed on their backs side by side, the new touch is very slightly "taller". It may feel thinner in your hand, but it is not thinner.
