Hi-resolution contact photos being converted to square, medium-res?

Hi, has anyone else experienced this? I've been setting new contact photos and instead of preserving the original, hi-res photo and live cropping it... it only stores a low-resolution photo square that can be zoomed later.

Definitely not preferable. Not sure if something on my system is causing this but I was wondering if anyone else has lost their hi-res photos in their address book?
