does having many apps opened affect the time it takes for the mbp to hibernate or wake up?

not at all. its all stored in Ram, so resume should be almost instantaneous no matter how much ram is used.

i have my MBP set to write all contents to the HD, and not ram. It takes much longer to resume/sleep (4gb to write), but it doesnt use the battery at all.
