Hiding mounted network volumes on desktop

Hi,

Is there a way to not have mounted network volumes showing on my desktop? I have to connect to lots of them and am happy with them just showing up in the finder window, along the side bar. I'm running 10.3.9.

finder>preferences, uncheck connected volumes?

i'm on 10.4.10 but i think it was the same in 10.3.9
