Hiding running applications from the status/menu bar in osx

Hello all, is there a way to not only hide running applications in the dock in OSX but most especially the status/menu bar at the top of the screen?

What exactly are you trying to hide? Give an example.

Hiding a running app from the dock will also hide it from the menu bar.

its a vnc program that does not have an icon on the dock, but only in the menu bar. the program does not give an option to hide the icon. but i still need to program to run on start-up but look like its not even there.

Oh sorry, I thought you meant file and edit etc menu bar items. If the app provides no option to hide its icon then you're probably out of luck.

I use a program called Dock Dodger to hide dock icons. It looks like their website is down, but perhaps Google can help.

I've only ever seen one 3rd party app that this works for, that's istat menus. Pity developers don't take avantage of this functionality.
