HIEF/HEVC in Camera.app only on iPhone 7 and higher?

i have an iPhone 6s and i was under the impression that it was getting the codec improvements to the camera app in iOS 11. is this incorrect? i'm not seeing the setting in there. the only thing i could think of as to why is that the iPhone 7 and up might have hardware support as opposed to 6s only having software support. it doesn't feel like it should be that old though

Correct. 7 and up can shoot in the new format. 6s and up can view/play the new format.
