I bought my 2.4 Penryn MBP about 7 months ago and this week its been driving me a bit crazy with high CPU and GPU temperatures...:(

And before you ask, no the ambient temperature isn't any higher because I've got aircon in the room!

Here's a screenshot of me on a normal day with not much CPU load at all and running the fans at 5650rpm with smcFanControl:

- 46ºC is as low as I could get the CPU with these extreme fan speeds
- This week normal operating temperature is about 57-61ºC with fans at approx. 2000rpm
- Last week the normal CPU temperature would fluctuate between 48-53ºc with the default fan speed of approx. 2000rpm

Maybe completely unfounded but I am starting to freak out because I've read so much about the Nvidia 8600GTM problem and as both the CPU and GPU are on the same heatpipe....could mine be giving up the ghost?

Your temps are quite normal and your fans, while a bit high, are still within normal operating range.

So how come the temperature has risen from an average of 48-53ºC to 57-61ºC in the space of a few days...?

I remember when I first got my Penryn MBP, the temperature averaged even lower and rarely hit 50ºC :(

Its the horrid thermal paste again. I've redone mine and my temps are 40-45 deg C idle, lowest I've hit is 32 deg C w/ max fans.

Which revision?

(1st gen - ati, 2nd gen - nvidia, or 3rd gen - nvidia)

I guess i'll pop open my MBP and 12" Powerbook and lay down some Arctic Silver

Temps that high considered normal just sort of frightens me. I mean, 50C, fine. That's what, 122F? Not so bad. But the GPU is nuts.

And whoever's running at 86C......... Jesus H.
