Hello,
this may be accidental or real, cannot prove it at this time. I installed 10.13.6 update yesterday and also installed the latest update to Flash player. Both yesterday. Today morning my MBP (2017) woke with kernel panic message and battery was 50% drained. After reboot and some checking I noticed my kernel_task was using 12-13 % cpu, which on this machine is basically one (virtual) core going full blast I think.
Anyway, some searching on the web and one of the top suggestions for solving high cpu load kernel_task seems to be to uninstall flash payer. I do not believe I need it, so I uninstalled. And kernel_task is not listed even at the top as cpu user anymore, typical load is 0.1% with spikes to 0.5%.
Another words, if you have high cpu load of kernel_task, try removing the Flash player. May be it needs to be updated to work with the 10.13.6 version again? I personally think Flash player should be abandoned anyway, so this is not that painful.
