Ok people, this is a puzzle. I have a 24" iMac 2.8GHz that exhibits this problem. My 20" iMac 2.4GHz does not. Both mount a drive named "homes" via SMB on startup.
When I boot my 24" iMac, the CPU utilization is quite high. "System Events" is using ~60% of the CPU, and "coreservicesd" is using ~40% of the CPU. After several minutes, the utilization drops back to normal. If I unmount/eject the "homes" volume, the CPU utilization drops back to normal almost immediately. When the CPU utilization is high, there is very little disk or network activity (which is what you'd think if it were related to the "homes" SMB volume). If I remount the "homes" volume, the CPU stays normal.
I used to have Time Machine configured, but I had to disable it. I have also other backup software that may have been configured at one point (Retrospect?), but I no longer use it, but I think it may still be running in the background.
This only happens on my 24" iMac. Any ideas?
Thanks!
