So what exactly affects fanspeeds? Heat, yes, but should my MBP (early 08) be heating up so much from watching Youtube videos, maybe it's just the widescreen ones? I do have other apps running though.

Flash on OS X sucks. That's all you need to know. And it may also be slightly suckier under SL too, somehow.

No (if you mean me), viewing online video on her MB will kick the fans in faster than if viewed on my MBP. And her fans are definitely louder than mine, by a factor of 2x. Subjectively speaking, of course.
 
Not techie enough to say for certain, but I'd imagine it has something to do with the MB using the onboard GPU, versus the dedicated chip the MBP has. Now, as to why your MBP is turning into a hovercraft, that is entirely another matter. I'd start with some basic Activity Monitor diagnostics to see what resources are hyperactive.
