It sounds like this is more common than Apple would like to admit. Have a 24" Intel iMac that has been on the fritz for the past 2 days. Apparently had some kernel issues where I was unable to boot the computer. Apple store did a repair disk utility, and was able to boot up. Now, I can keep the computer on for about 12-15 minutes before the CPU fan goes wild and shuts the computer down. Brought back to Apple store, now I was told that it wasn't the HD, but rather it sounded like a RAM issue. I checked my iStat, and it seems to me that the GPU diode temps are running really hot, over 90 deg. Celsius, thus spooling the fans up and ultimately causing the unit to turn off. This computer isn't used for gaming, or work. It is used for maybe 1-2 hr daily by my family for internet, and as storage for Apple TVs in the house. Can bad RAM cause this issue, or is it something else?
Any thoughts please?
