I've tried to upgrade from El Cap to High Sierra a few times but with little success. (I have a 2010 5.1 3.33ghz 12 core MP with 32gb RAM. System drive is on a Lyton/Samsung blade I installed in 2015. Possibly this is past its use by date though I've tested it and it's passed.)
The issue is the Geforce Nvidia 980 Ti GPU and webdrivers. Finally I got the right driver to install for the particular build of 10.13.6 and it actually started up. But guess what? The colors are out of whack with oranges and reds showing as blues and purples. I swapped the GPU for the Nvidia 1080 a friend lent me. Same result. Restart back to El Cap on another internal drive, all fine.
I did a clean install from a OS10.13.6 installer that a local mac guy provided me with which he's used successfully. High Sierra started up but wouldn't run the GPU because the web driver didn't exactly match the build number. After a huge amount of trial and error, I installed a security update and then the exact driver for that, restarted and there were those crazy colors. I connected a second monitor to make sure the first monitor hadn't been damaged and the result was the same.
I've posted recently about wanting to keep this 5.1 machine ticking over for a while more to see what Apple will bring out this year. The MacPro is used as a general purpose video editing workhorse but with 4K and higher formats coming this way it's getting hard. Others are editing 4K successfully on their 5.1 MPs with newer OS and PCIe cards and I'd follow suit but I'm stuck in this bizarre situation.
