If you are still keeping hard drives with previous OS's on them for using legacy programs like FCS on a Mac Pro 5,1, do not update to High Sierra. It installs a firmware update that prevents booting from drives with a previous OS. There is a thread about it over on the FCP X forum. I still use DVDSP so will not be updating my 5,1 to High Sierra.

I know we already sort this out in another forum. Just want to provide an update for the others that the High Sierra firmware update will NOT prevent the Mac Pro 5,1 booting from any previous OS. It's is safe to perform the firmware update no matter if the user want to install High Sierra or not.

The firmware update does not prevent the use of earlier operating systems. It merely enables booting from APFS drives.

Correct. I found out the poster in that thread on FCP X Forum was wrong. I've done the firmware update, but still waiting to install High Sierra.

Thanks for this clarification. I'm thinking of installing HS on my 5,1. So far not seeing any advantage to it. Knowing the firmware update will not affect my ability to boot El Capitan takes me a step closer.

On different drives, I have Mojave, HighSierra, Sierra, and El Capitan installed on my 5,1 and can easily go back and forth. Mojave is on a drive in an external dock (for testing), but the others are all internal.
