My tbMBP is slow to wake up since installing High Sierra, and often just remains as a black screen. Not really a problem, since if I close and reopen the laptop it wakes up - but for those black screen seconds, it's unnerving. Is this a known issue? Do you think it will be fixed?

There are many threads and reports of sleep, hibernate, etc. wake-up issues. Hopefully they address it.

Is hibernation mode on by default? I didn't turn it on, but if it's on by default, then it probably still is on. What does it do?

Since everything else is pretty good, maybe just leave it and hope a fix comes in an upcoming revision. I'm glad it's a common problem, and not something just wrong with my machine.
