I'm updating a 2011 Mac from Yosemite to High Sierra. The machine has a 512gb SSD and a 1TB HD.
After 2 hours the progress bar on the install is at about 25% . I tried earlier and it got to about 60% and then stayed there for over 2 hours. I restarted the machine and now it seems to be stuck again. All the searches I did showed that HS should install in 2 hours or less.
Give it more time or might I have a problem?

Be careful when updating to HS. It likes to convert the SSD file systems from HSF+ to APFS which can take a long time.

I'm not an expert on MacOS upgrades so I won't give any advice about how to proceed from where you are at now. If the update is halted or stuck for some reason then there still might be a way to do a reinstall while preserving your system settings and data. It's always recommended by Apple and usually by members of this site to have good current system backups (via Time Machine and/or another third party backup software) before proceeding with major MacOS upgrades.

I did do a Time Machine backup before starting so I’m covered there. Still hasn’t moved in 4 1/2 hrs.

I'd give it some more time and if it stays stuck at that point you might consider going into safe mode and seeing if the file system is ok especially if your OS is booting off the SSD. Before you do that you should check with some other users here in regards to HS upgrades and SSDs. If you previously upgraded the SSD yourself... I read that some SSDs had HS upgrade issues and some didn't. Post the rest of your hardware information... SSD brand and model... and configuration, RAM upgrade brand if you upgraded it and any other changes you made to the machine from original.

I'm sure someone else with more experience with HS upgrading could give you good advice. All my Macs use HDD spinners so I'm not the one to know about HS and SSDs. Again if you need to you might have to use safe mode, first aid or recovery mode and run a check on the file system for problems. Before you do any of that I'd wait a while longer and then get some experienced advice about how to proceed.

You did not exactly indicate what type/year of Mac you have.
Going from Yosemite to High Sierra is quite a leap.
Also, if you are using a wireless connection to upgrade it is going to be much slower.
You are better off going to Apple's forums and submitting your question.
You are likely to get more visibility there.
Be sure to be specific about the year/type of mac you have.
A number of Macs cannot be upgraded to High Sierra.

A bit more info and an update:
The computer is a 2011 iMac.
I re-started the machine in Recovery mode and ran Disk Repair. There were a few issues (forgot which ones) that were successfully repaired. The SSD is a Crucial CT512MX100SSD1.
I then proceeded to install Sierra. In spite of a few glitches, it's up and running fine now.
All of this started with buying a new camera that was unsupported by my older Lightroom 5. LR 6 requires at least El Capitan and that's where this odyssey began.
