Hi,

I am following this thread to create a USB Installer to install High Sierra to a new HDD on a Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13".

I have downloaded High Sierra from the App Store (Well by clicking on Get).

Then in terminal ran the command:

Code:
sudo /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Sierra --applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app --nointeraction

Apart from having to change the source and target names, everything seemed to go OK until at the end of the USB build I receieved the message:

Code:
Copying boot foles...
Failed to copy boot file: "boot.efi" couldn't be copied to "CoreServices"

Is this because I have tried it with High Sierra and not Sierra?

Any help would be great please, TVM

OK fixed that problem but now, no matter what I do I cannot get the Mac Startup Manager. All I get is the Internet Install option. Holding down CMD +Opt +R I only get Internet Recovery Mode?

Could I put the HDD in a working Mac and Install it on the Mac and then put it back in the dead Mac?

Managed to boot into recovery mode and opted for Internet Install to see what happened, only gives me the option to install Lion, which I selected. Then there were no target devices available.
I then quit the instal and opened up Disk Utility, the new HDD was shown but not formatted, so I formatted it.
Then tried the internet Lion install again and it is currently running.

It has just restarted and is saying Installing Mac OS X on disk "untitled"...
About 20 minutes remaining.

It will no doubt fail, telling me something's not compatible or the date is wrong!!

Don't want Lion as its so old but maybe once Lion is on I can do a clean install of High Sierra?

You hold just option on startup to select a USB installer. Command-R or Command-option-R will always start recovery.
You don't want to run the installer on a different computer because yours needs firmware updates it won't get.

That's just it, holding Option at startup does nothing. All I get when holding down the Option key at boot is the Internet Option? Tried both keys and have rest PRAM and SMC.

I have managed to Install OS Lion and when inserting the USB Thumb Drives they did not appear, then randomly a couple of times, I received a warning message saying:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices has been disabled".
These devices are not new and work fine on my Macbook Pro Mid 2015.
Resetting SMC and NVRAM didn't help?

I am in the process of downloading Mac OS Sierra on the now working Lion Macbook.
