Sometimes when I visit a forum, the topics that I have visited will be highlighted, at other times they won't be. Do I need to go into Safari/Preferences and make an adjustment? Or is there some other option?

Well on MacRumors, topics that have not been visited since your last login are bold and topics that have been visited by you since last login are not. Is this what you're talking about?
I guess what I'm talking about is simular to what happens when a person visits a Google search page and selects a web site; when the person goes back to the search page after being at the selected web site, the selected search page title will be colored purple so that the person knows where he or she has been.
