highlighting fonts on forum

I belong to a forum that when try to change the size/ color of the font I'm unable to. Someone wrote me and they said that they first type their message and then hold down the shift key and the arrow key and that keeps the message highlighted. Then they can proceed to alter the font in their message. They are I suppose on a PC so that doesn't help me. On this forum after you type your message you simply go to sizes / colors etc and the message stays highlighted. Any suggestions for when it doesn't.

Maybe link us to the forum because the method will most likely be different depending on the software that forum runs on. This forum uses vBulletin and you may have noticed the tags it places around modified text. If the other forum also uses vBulletin, those same tags will probably work in the same way, even if there's technically no toolbar from which to select them... Holding SHIFT and navigating with the arrow will simply select or deselect text for you.
