I know this may seem silly to ask, but I have read that the hinge is a bit vulnerable on the macbook pro, & mine will mostly be at home on a desk, but I may occasionally take it out. When I have it at home & shut down for the day, will closing the lid, & then opening it the next day weaken it? could I just leave the lid open when the laptop is shut down at the desk?

Not only is the hinge vulnerable, but the entire computer. In order to keep it from weakening, you shouldn't ever turn it on.

Routine usage will not cause a problem. These are likely subjected to testing on the order of hundreds of thousands of hinge cycles to ensure that they'll survive it.

I open and close mine several times a day. It's a laptop, it travels, and it's made to do just that.

Don't worry about it.
