For people looking at Adobe alternatives, Hitfilm 3 is often considered a decent alternative to After Effects.
It certainly has a few neat tricks up its sleeve. Hitfilm 3 is coming later this month (and the folks at FX Home have been good about making their dates in the past, at least in my experience).
It will work on Mac OS X (as does HF2 which I own), and there are plugins for FCP X.
