Hmm? Sound control greyed out until headset plugged in?

No sound on my MacBook pro. I went to volume control - greyed out! I plugged in headphones and it "comes alive" Weird fish!

I have restarted, gone to sound control and it is also greyed out and as menu control the sound stops being greyed out as soon as headphones plugged in?


Weird fish x2:confused: . . .although I am sure it is something simple - hmmm I hope so!

any ideas?
