so who tends to stay home around holidays ? Most people seem to extend their vacations this way crowding just about everywhere. So we tend to stay out unless it’s X-mass. We try to stay off the roads due to drunks. Today being the 4th it’s fire watch as many have illegal fireworks around here

The last few years Memorial Day , the 4th and Labor Day have been local . Plus no going down The Shore on weekends . The roads are just unbearable. There's an extended family reunion that was always held on the 4th , but that got moved to next weekend , just to avoid the nonsense of driving 30-50-70 miles each way with traffic ,DWI stops , and whatnot .

About the only thing we do on the 4th is try and find a fireworks display we can observe from afar. For whatever reason July 4th never seems to fall on or near a payday but always in between paychecks when there's never any money to do anything.

Thanksgiving is just for us, so we stay at home. But Christmas is usually when we visit my parents.

@jkcerda Visiting my parents puts us around an hour away from where you live (my parents live in Riverside County).

You’re not alone. Three years ago, my wife and I went to the local fireworks show (less than 20 miles from where we live). It took 2 hours to get back home, and during that time we had people doing 90+mph in the dirt, off-road, making driving extremely dangerous. Accidents were everywhere. That was the last time we did that. We now go outside in the back yard and view what we can of the illegal fireworks and official fireworks.

Besides, the Midwest has firework shows that put most of what CA has to shame. Go Iowa :).

I will go out of my way to not travel during holidays. I’ll gladly take a day off from work (or two, three+) during a normal business week for our “vacation” - so much better that way.

There are a lot less illegal fireworks this year than normal for the CA high desert vs previous years. Tonight will be the final say though.

Hah cool, we’re about 30 miles from Riverside. We go there for their Christmas lights at the Mission Inn - though last year wasn’t that great - downtown Riverside. Wife graduated from UCR this year. :) Yeah, we will drive to parent’s house in Northridge (1.5-2 hours) for Christmas.

On the 4th, we must stay home and hope the neighbors will be done acting like idiots by bedtime. I used to like Independence Day.

They're better when they extend a weekend. This one for you guys is a bit isolated. I get that they can't just move it, but does make it difficult to do much when it's on a Wednesday.

If they called it Independence Day instead of the 4th, they could move it to a Monday like they do with every other holiday.

Riverside County. :)

Riverside is about 30 minutes down the 60 from where they live (San Gorgonio Pass area, Banning/Beaumont/Cherry Valley).

That's a good idea. In Spain they're talking about moving the public holidays to Monday or Friday, as they are currently always fixed dates. Everyone knows it harms the Spanish economy as it is, but unfortunately most of the holidays are literally "holy days", so there's resistance from the church etc. about moving them.

First 4 of July for rocky and two other digs we have so got to watch themTo make sure they don’t go nuts

Just think of the nice quiet celebrations and calm unspooked pets there'd be if China hadn't invented fireworks.
Here's a scary thought.. tariffs on fireworks imports.
Nikita does ok. I had to sit with her next to the neighbors display to get her used to them

Yup been there a few times. Gorgeous. I will admit we haven't been in a few years though. Just haven't had time to do it.

So.... The cats were minimally bother last night. They looked up when a big boom happened, but that was it. Things seemed to ramp up between 9-10. That meant I stayed up an hour. At ten I just took something so I wouldn't notice or care. :)

Normally a stay at home during holidays guy here too. I just can’t get excited about going somewhere I’d like to visit when it’s inhabited by a higher than usual number of folks doing the very same thing.
Besides, there’s plenty to do around the farm. :D

My issue with July 4th is that it's not like it used to be back in my teens and 20s.

Nowadays they have to make a production out of it. You show up three hours early for food, music and events for the kids. If you're going to a freebie, try and find parking. And the food and activities are not free. If you pay for the event, still try and find parking. Then you spend more inside.

So, there you are, paying all that money (or not, depending) and sitting twiddling your thumbs for three hours before the first fireworks are launched and having to deal with crowds the entire time.

Now I sound like the old crotchety person, but back in the 80s and early 90s you showed up, took a seat and got fireworks. Hour tops. Not three hours dealing with crowds and people trying to sell you stuff. The fireworks was the event - not the stuff around it.

Well, just show up for the fireworks someone might say. Sure. And you will totally miss it. Because everyone else showed up three hours before the event and took all the parking. If you make it to the grounds on time, you're standing on the edge because those same people took all the spots.

Sorry. I'm just not interested in a three hour event dealing with parking, crowds and paying money for 20 minutes of fireworks.

I have not bought fireworks in over a decade or attended one of the shows anywhere, you can enjoy the fireworks in the sky for free from just about anywhere, walked all 4 dogs last night w/o any issues.

That is true…except in the last place we lived and the place we live now.

Both communities are close to two annual fireworks shows, but the nature of the topography prevents any but the highest launched fireworks from being seen.

Fortunately, it only seems to be my wife who's ever mildly disappointed. My two kids don't care and I'm not interested.
