Upgraded my XS Max to iOS 13 today with the hope of knowing a little better what I'm getting into tomorrow and maybe making the setup of the new Pro Max a little faster.

We had a lot of debates about hardware/firmware and FaceID - is it 13?, will it be new hardware?, etc.

Whatever the case turns out to be, I have to say FaceID on 12 vs. FaceID on 13 is really fast. It feels very much like what I remember going from the 6 to the 6S - far, far faster. We'll see about angles and distances, but the speed increase all by itself is fabulous.

Agreed. I think I recall hearing that iPhone 11 is supposed to allow for faster FaceID as well but I may be mistaken. That would be awesome as I still miss the super quick convenience of TouchID...

Not sure if it's faster but the angle of the sensor is slightly wider. Some reporters noticed a slightly easier time unlocking it.

On iOS 13, I wonder if it's just looking for any face and not just mine...

Definitely noticed a big improvement on my xs max going to iOS 13.1 (skipped iOS 13 betas)

Didn’t mind before but definitely faster now and feel it didn’t get an error as often either when scanning

It's crazy fast on my XS! It wasn't exactly slow before but the speed increase is very noticeable

I'd say that's true but it's hard to be exact. I wonder if they just kicked up the dot illuminator?

What's insane is Apple advertises on the iPhone 11 Pro page as:

"Face ID is now up to 30 percent faster.

It works from farther away. At more angles, too. And it’s still the most secure facial authentication in a smartphone."

I've found literally none of the above to be true. And 30 percent faster is just an iOS 13 feature. No difference in speed from my XS Max to my 11 Pro Max.

This is my first foray with Face ID and to be honest I forget it’s there unless I’m just looking at notifications. I don’t know how it was before but this is definitely fast!
