Home Depot plans to officially support Apple Pay in its home improvement stores following a retail system upgrade, reports Bloomberg. Though there's no timeline on when Apple Pay support will be introduced in Home Depot stores, a spokesperson said the payment service would be available after a revamp to the company's point-of-sale machines.

News of Home Depot's plans to support Apple Pay come following earlier reports suggesting the retailer was shutting off Apple Pay access in its stores. Home Depot has NFC-based terminals in its stores allowing for unofficial use of Apple Pay, but as of this morning, a few customers discovered they could no longer use Apple Pay at Home Depot.

Contacting customer support resulted in a message stating that while Apple Pay was not supported in Home Depot stores, PayPal was, hinting that Home Depot may be choosing to promote PayPal over Apple Pay, but as it turns out, that's not the case. According to Bloomberg, Home Depot's NFC checkout terminals have been disabled as the company works on upgrading its point-of-sale system.

Many Home Depot stores continue to support checkout through Apple Pay using NFC payment terminals at this time, but access may be shut off in the coming weeks until Apple Pay officially launches at the retail chain. Home Depot will likely support Apple Pay both in its retail stores and through its iOS app.

With 2,000 stores across the United States, Home Depot will be the largest retailer to offer Apple Pay.

so that explains why I had issues using Apple Pay at my local Home Depot this weekend. All other times before, it has worked flawlessly. I'm excited for them to make this upgrade!

Matter of time until everyone supports it. So, so, so much easier/quicker than swiping cards or paying cash.

I've been using Apple Pay at Home Depot ever since September. You can use it anywhere with NFC - a fact that is glossed over too casually but the media and Apple themselves!

So glad to see more stores getting on-board, but it can't happen fast enough! Hoping for many more...

Not now. They temporarily disabled it.

This isn't quite true in my experience. There are two HD stores within a few miles and, at each of them, AP with a Chase Visa worked OK - mostly. But AP with a Citi MasterCard has never worked. The transaction seemed to complete - the phone said "Done" - and them it was declined. Every time.

This whole situation was extremely frustrating to me, and I am a little soured even with them deciding to support it.

My local Home Depot has had Apple Pay working since the day it launched, I have used it easily 30 times there. As I am currently in a project, I make a lot of trips there. Since I knew Apple Pay worked, the past few weeks if I needed something quickly I just grabbed my phone and watch. Yesterday I did that and it didn't work. The cashier said they no longer supported Apple Pay. It was extremely embarrassing and frustrating. I typically keep a card in my car which I went to grab, but none the less, I was not too happy.

You can't just turn something off like that without notice, it would be like if Home Depot just stopped taking Visa.

except it isnt true. CVS has NFC but blocked AP.

On 4/2, I attempted to use ApplePay at Home Depot using self-checkout. I've used ApplePay before at Home Depot at a regular check out stand (garden center) but when I used it at self-checkout, the attendant told me that the card must be swiped.

This happened at the Cupertino location, less than 2 miles away from Apple HQ. Needless to say, I had to go back to my car and grab my wallet and effectively held up the line at Self-checkout. Thankfully, the attendant was super patient! Glad to see official support coming to Home Depot!

I'm confused as to why it needs to be disabled while they're doing this "upgrade", especially since it was working at most of them for months.

It is perhaps true that you can use it everywhere they have the NFC, but only if it is turned on. Some stores (HEB Supermarkets here in Houston for example) have NFC capable POS machines, but the feature is apparently turned off. The poor attendants are getting tired of telling people that it doesn't work.

They turned it off a month or two ago here. Why do this? It already worked, it was cost effective, it was more secure, and confused only poorly-trained employees.
