Hi all,

As a complete newby with Mac's I feel it best to ask a few questions before trying to set up my home for complete wireless cover and setting up to use Airtunes throughout the house.

I have an iMac and have also just bought an Airport Extreme and two Airport Express. I am also just about to move house, so want to try and get things right from the start.

My aim is to do the following:

  • Set up wireless both upstairs and downstairs
  • Set up streaming audio throughout the house

First question is about the wireless. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and the cable internet is quirky to say the least. Sometimes it is strong, other times incredibly slow. The provider has given me a Motarola Surfboard cable modem that I have connected into the Airport Extreme to give me wireless. Problem is that the wireless is not very strong, so I think I am going to need to buy and install another Extreme when we move house.

I will be asking the provider to set up the cable connection upstairs in the new house, and will probably need to have a cable between the two Extremes run from the upstairs to downstairs.

So, is this the ideal method for extending the network, is there any loss of signal through the LAN cable? Is there anything I should be aware of before doing this?

Next is the setup of the music system. My aim here is to be able to setup speakers in different areas of the house, and to control everything by either iPad or iPhone, using the Remote app.

I am looking at buying a Bose speaker system, and would like to connect it in with iTunes. I am thinking about getting an Acoustimass 6 speaker system for downstairs, and connecting it to one of the Airport Expresses.

Upstairs I would use our existing speaker system with the other Airport Express.

So questions here are:

  • Does anyone have any experience with Bose and Mac's?
  • Is there anything else that would be needed?
  • Is this the optimal setup?
  • Can you play two different songs at the same time through the different speaker systems?
  • Is there anything I should be aware about in this setup?

Much appreciate any help on this, as I do want to try and get it right first time.
