So Network security has been at the top of my head a lot lately and just wondering what steps the guys here at MR make for a 2018 approach I suppose. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

-SonicWALL with Gateway anti-virus service. This also hosts a VPN that I’ve configured our iPhones to communicate to. On the plus side of being able to AirPrint to our printers at home from anywhere is cool as well. We also have LB & failover setup to automatically failover to an AT&T LTE Aircard if Cox internet goes down. Reason for this is our home automation. We leave the house with nothing but our phones at times and it’s the only way we open up our garage door/other doors. Saved my butt a few times of when Cox decided to go down, but I can still use the MyQ app to open the garage door to go inside.

-Windows Server 2012 as an AD domain controller. No real need for this in actuality in a home setup but I like having my own AD domain that everything connects to.

-Sophos anti-virus running on all of my Macs and the one PC we have, not including the AD DC. I heard the old adage of anti-virus not being needed on a Mac, but I don’t want to chance anything, after Ransomware made its way to Macs now. Though I have the GAV activated on the SonicWALL, I feel like I can’t be too safe here.

-Ruckus wireless AP we got for free, so why not? It has 802.11ac. This provides our WiFi for the house. One AP was enough to cover the entire house.

Is this a little overkill? I’m dead serious about cyber security but mostly concerned about Ransomware attacks. What other steps are you guys taking? Now obviously it’s overkill but I just am working with what I know.

Any other recommendations?

Yep. Overkill. :)

Regarding ransomware....incremental/continuous backup is key for Win boxes, at least for that attacks we've seen most recently. Obviously current patching for Win is key too.

As I recall, there has only been one Mac ransomware attack in the wild. Good summary of most recent threats here.
