Hello.

I’m going to get a smart speaker for upstairs. I have a house full of Apple devices apart from an Alexa show which we were given. We don’t have a lot of automation apart from Christmas lights as no particular need but hope to upgrade as the opportunity presents ie smart lights etc.

I’m not sure between a HomePod or the 2022 Amazon studio echo or an alternative. Probably £200 max.

After suggestions and experience of both.

what music services do you use? if you don't have Apple Music, I wouldn't recommend the HomePod.
You can airplay anything to them, but using the player in the speaker is far more reliable than airplay.

I'd second the Sonos option, I have them, and they're great. Can subscribe to any music service. Can be controlled from any device on the network, not just the phone that's playing to the homepods.

I have Apple one and Amazon prime.

I have two Apple Homepods; they are excellent. Sound quality is better than pretty much anything I've heard around that same price or even higher. Certainly better than any Sonos product I've owned and tried. Homepods work far better with Apple devices than any other brand I've tried (often needs lots of faffing with 3rd party apps, connection issues etc).

Homepod has been ok for me I don't really use it as much as I thought I would. Really wish it would get a little louder though.

I haven't noticed any volume decrease. The Homepod is designed to be used in smaller rooms, not large open spaces. It's plenty loud in our kitchen and second bedroom. My 'proper' hi-fi is far more powerful and could blow the windows out if I cranked it right up, but it would also deafen me. So it stays at about 9o'clock (dial starts at 7), 10 is the absolute maximum I could run it without having angry neighbours bashing my door down. The Homepod offers greater clarity and depth than anything else of that type that I've heard. Loud isn't everything. Less is more.

You may be right I never really noticed until I listened to some music last night. That was the first time I had used it in a while.
I have mine as default audio to my AppleTVs and I noticed that I have to raise the volume to hear what I was able to hear before at a lower volume when watching TV.

If you’re an Apple user and intend to use it for music I’d go for the HomePod every time. I have a lot of echos that I use for smart home stuff but for music and speakers for my Apple TVs I prefer the HomePods.

This is since 16.2 for you?. I´ve noticed that the maximum volume is lower, but this is been happening since a few firmwares ago. It´s been a while. Probably to prevent overheating?

I can’t remember when I first noticed it but it was definitely before 16.2.

I think for most people, the Amazon products are better, have more compatible devices, and are better supported by the manufacturer. The downside is that for those of us, myself included, whose jobs require absolutely confidential communication and a reasonable expectation of privacy, Apple has the far superior privacy policy as opposed to Amazon or Google.

So until Apple gets on the ball with its support for the Home products, and unless your job requires an extraordinary level of confidentiality, Amazon seems to be the way to go.

I know it’s a few years old but who really knows if this is still going on… Apple is no more of angels than any other big tech company. They just talk the biggest game. They all suck.
