Having just set up my 12 mini, with settings transferred from my SE1, I noticed that there is no parallax effect anymore on the home screen with the 12 mini with iOS 14 (while it is present on the SE1 with iOS 13). Reduce Motion is off. Should it still be present, or is that something that was removed? Maybe the wallpaper needs to have a larger size on the 12 mini compared to the SE1?

I don't especially care about the parallax effect, just curious.

It depends on the wallpaper, and there is a setting on the wallpaper selection screen that lets you turn the feature on and off.

Thanks, I now found it and was able to turn it on. I suspect that it was turned of due to the small wallpaper size. I've been using the same wallpaper since the iPhone 4s. :)

Also the correct term is Perspective Zoom, TIL.

Used to be called the parallax effect back in iOS 7 I believe. It was much more pronounced then. Glad you figured out what you needed.

Not sure what you mean by “small wallpaper size”? Not a big deal, but the parallax effect was very cool. is there still a way to use it with your own wallpaper, or ?

thanks!

By “small wallpaper size” I mean an image with a resolution (significantly) smaller than the iPhone’s native resolution, so that iOS has to scale it up (by a lot) to make it cover the whole screen. My guess was that because perspective zoom requires the image to be scaled larger than the screen (to be able to pan across the image for the effect), that perspective zoom is deactivated (when setting up the iPhone from an older device) if the image already has to be scaled to just to cover the screen area. That guess may be totally wrong though.

Under Settings > Wallpaper, where your current lock screen and home screen wallpapers are shown, you can tap on either of them to get a preview. In that preview, you can turn on or off perspective zoom by tapping on the symbol at the bottom center.

Got it - thanks!
