Home screen wallpaper & battery icon

Does anyone can tell me how to set a wallpaper for the home screen? I downloaded and installed iOS4 in an iphone 3g. There is no set as lock screen option. Also, do you know if I can set battery status next to the battery icon in the same iphone? I could really use the help

Those are both features that are unavailable on a non-jailbroken 3G.

They are only on the 3GS and iPhone 4.
