Home sharing in iTunes

Similar to the way iOS and iTunes must be almost kept current versions to sync with one another,does the same apply to home sharing as well ?

For example, with iOS and iTunes 12.5.4 on Mac u can still sync to older 9.3.5 iOS device.. but probably not older than that..

Is this the same with new Itunes/OS, but older AppleTV 3? (use MacOS to stream to Apple TV 3)
