Home theatre with multiple zones

I want to build a Mac (Hackintosh) based home theatre system for a home with 5-6 zones. There will be one main entertainment centre and the other zones will be basic TV and audio. My plan is to have one main computer and external hard drive and an ethernet link to mini computers in each zone. I would like to be able to control all zones with an iPod touch using VPN. Any suggestions on setting up such a system?
