I use a Ecobee 3 Lite in my apt for heating and cooling that is connected to my home Wifi. Mainly for the weather on the stat itself; filter change notices and being able to control the temps remotely. I am attempting to find why my home internet speed tests show slow and was wondering if a device like this can slow down the network. How much effect would it likely have when connected 24/7. Thanks for any input.

I cannot imagine that the Ecobee has anything to do with your internet speed. Are you suggesting that your speed was faster before you began to use the Ecobee? Or simply speculating?

Well, there are various tools available to troubleshoot this. Your wifi servers app may have the ability to show the activity level for the Ecobee (as well as all of the other devices connected to your wifi network), you can use that to satisfy yourself that you don't have something going on (unusually high level of activity with something that should basically be idle).

Fundamentally, if your wifi network speed is unsatisfactory, then it is either the speed of the network itself or the modem or router. I would suggest contacting your internet provider and having them troubleshoot - they can do that remotely, and they can also tell you if the network in your area is temporarily slow for some reason.

It is very unlikely that the ecobee has any effect on your internet speed, unless you're on super-slow DSL or dial-up. And perhaps not even then.

Ecobee technical specs say it uses 15-20 MB/month. Real life measurements by users on the ecobee sub on reddit bear this out. That's practically nothing by today's standards.
