So you’re saying that the workaround to automatically open a garage door by turning on a switch stopped working?

There really isn't too much HomeKit stuff out there for garage door openers.

I couldn't find any wall mounted door openers that had built-in HomeKit support. I got Chamberlin RJO70 a year ago, because according to Chamberlin, an additional Home Bridge Hub that they sell could provide support for HomeKit.

I got the Home Bridge Hub as well, but couldn't ever get the thing to work.

Neither is working with the latest beta. I found that option because my old setup is not working. We'll see if this is fixed in the next beta.

I hope it’s not a permanent patch. I was always afraid Apple would do that and I love having the garage doors open on their own as I’m pulling into the driveway.

don't have the beta, but I'm guessing the "when I arrive home, open" option shown in the picture above will have the door open as you arrive home. And it's a pre-set automation that you just have to enable, without having to do a workaround involving a dummy switch or whatever.

Yeah the OP’s wording and the picture are confusing me a bit but the option to open a secure device (lock, garage door) by a location automation has always been there. Just sends a notification to the iPhone to run it. Same with Shortcuts. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see Apple opening the flood gates for this. That could just be a suggested automation to turn on and off.

Unless… this is a Matter functionality preview.

It is only beta, I wouldn't worry about it yet. The garage door now has the option to open when anyone arrives. I don't think it was there before.

Was it always there? Did require confirmation before the door will open? I have been using a switch to bypass the confirmation for a couple of years now. I cant remember.

That specific garage door toggle for when you arrive home, I am unsure of. There are toggles auto created in iOS 15 (what I’m using currently) for other automation suggestions though. I’ve been using the same smart switch workaround as you.

All I’m saying is, I don’t think the toggle alone means that it will auto open without a switch workaround. Apple is heavily set in their privacy and security stance. Think it’s just there as a quick way to enable and disable.

I may be wrong though and I won’t mind if I am.

I think it still needs confirmation. I still can't get Siri to open the garage door directly without unlocking the phone. I was able to make a new switch automation. I don't know why my old one was deleted? But location trigger seems to be broken with this beta. I can't test until they fix it. Telling Siri to turn on the switch opens the door without confirmation. that automation still works.

This is by design. It’s a security feature. The only way around it is to have a Homebridge setup and use a dummy switch.

Yes. This is true. I always forget that option. I have many dummy switches and I wouldn’t want to use actual smart outlets. Homebridge was the answer for me.

it is working again with the latest beta.

I have Hoimebridge. I should look into it to see if the solution is better?

Maybe I’m missing the issue here, but using a meross HomeKit compatible garage door opener switch and love it. Using on both doors and control from my watch With voice commands.

Buy the Meross garage door opener - very cheap and super easy to install and works great with HomeKit.

Yeah, you guys are missing the point of this thread. It’s not about the Meross opener being bad or not working, it’s about a workaround for automatically opening the doors using location that was removed with the iOS 16 beta.

got it, and that would be a great feature. it works nice from my watch, but even better just from pulling up to the house.
