I may be missing the obvious but why are these codes so secretive? If I accidentally shared my code for a Leviton Switch with someone, what privacy damage can be done? I always see YouTube reviewers hiding these codes like they contain the secret to KFC’s original recipe.

Probably just being cautious/just in case. I’d do it too based on the unknown risk of doing so.

It’s an 8 digit code, currently numeric, so “only” 100M possible codes, although they could change this from base10 to base36 or greater pretty easily, I imagine.

I don’t know for sure but given current 100M max, I suspect that the codes aren’t guaranteed universally unique and therefore don’t really mean anything except during local setup.

That is, the security domain is within your personal HomeKit environment and therefore your AppleID+network.

I have a feeling you are right about the codes not being a key to sustained security but more of a one time setup code.

Yeah probably for ease of setup. I was having an issue with one of my apps and sent a screenshot to the dev with one of my codes. I’m pretty confident that I’m not in any danger but wasn’t 💯 sure if there are reasons to hide it that are not immediately clear on the surface. Maybe someone knows something I don’t. Thanks.
